Our guide to deal-winning ABM personas

The difference between a mediocre ABM programme and one that generates pipeline? Well-researched personas. Start with a shaky foundation and you target the wrong accounts, reach the wrong stakeholders and your messaging falls flat because you don't understand who you're talking to or what matters to them.

That’s why we’re sharing our guide to deal-winning ABM personas. Not the generic "VP of IT" or "Director of Marketing" snapshots that live in a forgotten folder. We're talking about ABM personas - detailed profiles of the specific decision-makers, influencers, and stakeholders within your target accounts who actually have power to move deals forward.

Get personas right, and everything else becomes easier. Get them wrong, and you're guessing, wasting time, and wondering why your ABM program isn't delivering.

Why Next Call’s ABM personas are different

Your standard buyer persona might tell you "CFOs care about ROI and risk mitigation." That's true for every CFO in the world, so it's not particularly useful. Your message becomes broadly appealing to no one in particular.

Our ABM personas dig deeper. They ask: Which CFOs in enterprise IT companies with 5,000-50,000 employees care most about how this integrates with existing systems? What implementation concerns keep them hesitant? Who do they need to convince internally? What's their timeline?

  • Traditional buyer personas = broad profiles of a role across an industry

  • ABM personas = specific profiles of individuals within YOUR target accounts who influence YOUR solution decisions

ABM personas force you to target specific fish in specific ponds. You know their names, their priorities, their decision criteria. When everything - messaging, events, outreach - is built around these detailed personas, conversion rates increase and deal velocity accelerates.

What makes an effective persona

A strong ABM persona captures more than just a job title. It reveals:

  • Their problem: Not generic "efficiency challenges" but specific problems relevant to your solution. What are they struggling with today? What's the business impact? How are they currently managing without you?

  • Their success metrics: How they're actually measured. What winning looks like in their role. What would make their boss happy or make their job easier?

  • Their buying mindset: Are they data-driven or relationship-driven? Risk-averse or early adopter? Do they drive change or resist it? Who do they listen to? What concerns would block their support?

  • Their priorities: Beyond the obvious. A CFO in financial services cares about compliance. A CFO in tech cares about speed. Same role, different industries, completely different decision criteria.

  • Engagement preferences: How often should you engage them? What content resonates? Which events appeal to them? Who do they respect and want to hear from?

  • Our Next Call feedback loop: every conversation we have with your prospects feeds back valuable intelligence to how those personas can be honed.

This is what separates a persona that sits unused from one that’s actually referenced when talking to prospects.

The cost of getting personas wrong

The real cost of getting personas wrong is that you engage the wrong stakeholders (or no stakeholders at all!). You have great conversations with people who don't actually influence the decision. You build relationships with gatekeepers but never reach decision-makers. You spend months nurturing someone with no real power to move things forward.

We've seen this happen to our clients before they started working with us. A vendor spends months developing deep relationships with a technology manager only to discover the actual buying decision sits with the CFO - who was never engaged. Or a team reaches the C-suite but ignores the operations leader whose buy-in is critical to implementation.

Strong personas prevent this. They ensure you're targeting the right people from the start.

Building personas the right way

Effective personas need more than LinkedIn research and industry reports, they need real intelligence. We start by mapping your target accounts and identifying who actually influences decisions in your solution category. Not everyone in the company - just the stakeholders who matter for deals like yours.

Then we gather intelligence. We talk to your team, we might interview recent customers, we look at recent wins and losses. We add in our years of experience in the field to identify what’s going on and what solutions are required. This inside perspective transforms personas from educated guesses to battle-tested profiles grounded in real outcomes.

A real-world example

Consider a CRM vendor targeting financial services. A generic persona might say "CFO - cares about cost control." Not particularly useful.

An effective ABM persona for that same CFO looks like this:

  • Persona: Chief Financial Officer, Mid-Market Financial Services

  • The Problem: Financial data scattered across legacy systems. Month-end close takes six to eight weeks instead of two. Forecast accuracy is 60% instead of 90%. Finance team remains tactical (spreadsheets) instead of strategic.

  • Success Metrics: Close month-end in two weeks. Improve forecast accuracy to 90%+. Free up finance team to do analysis instead of data entry.

  • Buying Mindset: Risk-averse (regulated industry). Wants proof from peers. Concerned about implementation disruption.

  • Engagement: Monthly during evaluation. Cares about ROI metrics, implementation timeline, success stories from similar-sized firms. Respects analyst recommendations and peer networks.

A salesperson reads this and thinks: "I know exactly how to talk to this person." They open with a business problem, not a product feature. They reference similar-sized financial services companies. They address implementation risk head-on.

That's the power of a good persona.

How personas drive your entire ABM programme

With solid personas in place, everything becomes more focused:

  • Targeting becomes precise. You know exactly who you're looking for within each account. Research is focused. LinkedIn prospecting is targeted. You waste less time on low-probability conversations.

  • Messaging resonates. You craft distinct messages for each persona. The CFO hears ROI and risk language. The operations leader hears implementation and adoption language. The CIO hears technical compatibility language. Everyone hears what matters to them.

  • Events work better. Rather than one-size-fits-all events, you run different experiences for different personas. Executive dinners for strategic conversations. Technical workshops for hands-on evaluation. Product demonstrations for end users. Right audience, right agenda, right outcome.

  • Sales gets smarter. Armed with good personas, you know which stakeholders to engage first, what conversation to start with, and what concerns to address proactively.

  • Measurement becomes clear. Which stakeholder types are moving fast? Which are stuck? This intelligence guides your next moves.
